List of Volunteer Opportunities
Organization: Community Club
Type of Activity: Tutoring/Mentoring
Volunteers tutors are needed to work one-on-one with DC public and charter students enrolled in the Community Club tutoring, mentoring, and college access program (www.communityclub.org). Community Club meets at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church (NYAPC), located at 1313 NY Avenue, NW, from 6:45 pm to 8:15 each Thursday during the school year. Since 1962, Community Club has helped DC public and charter school students, primarily in grades 7-12, improve their academic skills, prepare for college and career, and become successful adults. Our tutors often become role models and offer sources of stability in students' lives, and many foster relationships with their students that extend beyond Thursday evenings to special outings and attendance at school events. Tutor/student pairs often form lifelong friendships.
To Volunteer or for Additional Information: Please contact Susannah Harris at susannah@communityclub.org or Tom Karr ‘84 at tom@communityclub.org.

If you are interested, send a copy of your resume to Devin Tucker at dtucker@nhtinc.org. Please write “After-school Volunteer Tutor” in the subject line. Organization: Civil Justice and Pro Bono Services of Maryland.
Type of work or activity: Foreclosure prevention pro bono project: Opportunity for members of the Maryland bar.
The Maryland Bar and two pro bono organizations (Civil Justice and Pro Bono Services of Maryland) have a strong program working with individuals in Maryland who are in foreclosure or in danger of entering foreclosure. Workshops for walk-ins with mortgage/debt issues are held on a weekly basis and attorneys offer legal counsel and, if interested, take on individual foreclosure cases. This is a very well run and successful program. To participate, you should take one of the training classes below:

Mission Statement:Since 1962, The Community Club has helped DC school students improve their academic skills, prepare for college and career, and become successful adults. We provide a supportive, secure environment where learning and understanding flourish. We believe the structure of our program – long-term, one-on-one relationships between students and caring adult tutor-mentors – provides students the best opportunity for academic and personal success. Organization: DC government public school tutoring program
Type of work or activity: Tutoring students
Individuals: Be a Tutor-Mentor to a DCPS student. What will you do? • Tutor one student for one to two pre-scheduled hours per week, during after school hours. Tutoring will align with curriculum and pacing guides. • Communicate with DCPS representative, afterschool coordinator, parents and teachers regarding student progress.• Communicate regularly with the student you are tutoring. Actively encourage attendance and motivate engagement.• Attend an orientation/training. • Attend a meet-and-greet at the high school where you will be working with other tutors. • Attend high school graduation. How will we support you? • We will provide the training and curriculum guides for the year.• We will provide a regular point-of-contact from Chancellor Rhee’s office. Communicate by phone, email, online group forum, etc. • On-site after school coordinators will support and communicate with tutors regularly. What are the Rewards? Research shows that one-on-one tutoring and mentoring can have remarkable results. This year we are aiming for this result: a high school diploma for every student who works with a tutor. While we fix the system, we cannot let one more student become part of a dismal ‘dropout’ statistic. Statistics can tell us the effect that graduation can have on a child’s future. However, only the people who work with students can describe the rewards of this work. Work with us, and let one student show you the rewards.
